Our Story:
In 1999
New Beginnings rescued it’s first horse by the name of Fancy. She was
rescued from a slaughter house and was being sold by a local rescue
organization. When she was delivered she was severely dehydrated and had a
serious case of shingles. This so called rescue facility was nothing more
than a horse trader looking to turn a dollar on ill and neglected horses.
After 16 years of owning horses I pretended to act as if I knew nothing of
horses. I was appalled with the whole situation and promised myself that I
would do whatever I could to help these precious creatures whenever
possible. With 24 years experience behind us, we are dedicated to
rescuing horses. All beautiful and unique in their way, each one is so
fragile. They are eager to start their new life. Montana which is
pictured on the cover was the first to be adopted.
How We Work:
New Beginnings is
located on Camano Island, WA. We are dedicated to the defense of abused,
neglected, and/or abandoned animals. We run through a series of steps with
each animal to that ensure the most secured recovery.

-
Complete Vet Check
-

-
Sport/Trail Training
Our hope is to
transform these horses into completely sound animals that would be able to
adjust to any situation and fit in any home. We then put each horse through
a training program that will slowly build strength and agility. When the
animal has completed all ground training, as well as training under saddle
they will be ready to go to their new home.
Alternative Care
More often than not owners will experience the pain of vet
bills associated with major injuries. Or owners may not understand or have
the time to care for an injured horse properly. In this case they may
contact us for an evaluation. If the owner is unsure of how to proceed, we
will make a site visit to access the situation. In these cases we can
educate the owners on the proper care of these animals, and offer advice on
correct containment.
Rehabilitation Program
Once the horse arrives at our facility we assess the general
well being of the horse. By this we can identify a proper feeding
schedule. As soon as our vet can arrive a full exam will be done and a
round of vaccines will be given. Once the horse stabilizes and has bonded
with the others, he will be released into the pasture. He will also receive
a huge amount of exposure to children of various ages and many different
types of animals. This helps the horse become desensitized to his
surroundings. Throughout the horse’s care at our facility, he will be
handled on a daily basis ensuring a sense of peace. Through the use of
massage therapy we are able to correct behavioral issues that have been
embedded into the horse’s behavior. We have found that this technique can
be useful in horses with biting issues, cribbing, face sensitivity, pulling,
hauling, etc. Once we have corrected the behavioral issues we can move onto
the foundation training.
Why We’re Different:
New Beginnings main focus
is to rehabilitate each horse to the most optimal condition by re-training
each of the. Whether trail or a specific equine sport (ie; dressage,
pleasure, reining) the horse will run through a series of lessons based on
the individual horse interest. Many of these horses come to us severely
emaciated from being starved, or have experienced years of abuse.
Unfortunately many of these beautiful animals wined up experiencing the
vicious cycle of going from one bad home to the next. Our goal is to stop
this cycle and ensure a long-term home that will provide lasting love
throughout the horse’s life.
How We Can Help You:
Whether it’s the new
placement of the horse, or simply working with the owner to identify the
best workable treatment for the horse and owner, a site assessment and
recommendations on proper treatment, training and housing of the animal
often helps the owner in making the ultimate decision.
How You Can Help Us:
When
each horse has reached a stabilized health level and training has been
completed, we will try to find the most suitable home for each of them to
live out a happy, useful life. All of our help is purely volunteer work and
we are always in need of assistance with cleaning stalls, grooming, feeding,
and all of those other horsy duties that come with caring for a horse.
However we continue to need assistance with expenses such as: feed, vet
care, transport costs, training, and more. Donations of money, gift
certificates, or wish list items are always welcome. Any help you can give
will be greatly appreciated.
